In value terms, blood-grouping reagents exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 118%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X kg), comprising a 5.1% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.3% from 2012 to 2022. Zimbabwe (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zimbabwe (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest blood-grouping reagents supplier in SADC, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -16.8%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -68.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 215%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (-3.2%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of blood-grouping reagents decreased by -11.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 80%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, blood-grouping reagents imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 110%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 54% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malawi (8.6%) and Swaziland (4.7%). The following importers - Angola (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each reached a 6.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +45.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 76% of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +49.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -13.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, blood-grouping reagents import price increased by +68.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
