Exports in SADC
For the fourth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of blow lamps, which increased by 21% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 104%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, blow lamp exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 158% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blow lamps exports, with a CAGR of -1.5% from 2012 to 2022. Tanzania (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tanzania saw its share reduced by -6.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest blow lamp supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +1.0%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, blow lamp export price increased by +7.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 66% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+39.8%).

Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of blow lamps were imported in SADC; shrinking by -9.6% compared with the year before. In general, imports recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 83%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, blow lamp imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 65% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) held a 7.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (7.5%) and Mozambique (5.3%). The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - together made up 5.8% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+33.2%), Namibia (+16.0%), Mozambique (+14.2%) and Zimbabwe (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+13 p.p.), Namibia (+6.5 p.p.), Mozambique (+4.4 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.4 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-24.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported blow lamps in SADC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 6.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Namibia, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-11.1% per year) and Namibia (+8.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, blow lamp import price increased by +22.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 59% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
