Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +13.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 88%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, South Africa (X units) represented the key exporter of electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets in SADC, constituting 98% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets exports, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (+10 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest electric board, desk and panel supplier in SADC.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. Imports in SADC
In 2021, purchases abroad of electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets increased by 6.4% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, electric board, desk and panel imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 68% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 6.2% share, followed by Mozambique (5.6%) and Angola (5.2%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Namibia (X units) and Zambia (X units) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+7.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.4%), Namibia (+5.4%), Zambia (+3.6%) and Tanzania (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +7.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Mozambique increased by +11 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported electrical boards, panels, consoles, desks and cabinets in SADC, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-13.4% per year) and Mozambique (+8.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 40% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
