Book And Brochure Market Size in SADC
The SADC book and brochure market rose remarkably to $X in 2022, picking up by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Book And Brochure Production in SADC
In value terms, book and brochure production expanded notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Book And Brochure Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, book and brochure exports in SADC skyrocketed to X units, increasing by 19% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, book and brochure exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporter of books, brochures and similar printed matter in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), making up a 14% share of total exports. Swaziland (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+24.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Swaziland (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Swaziland (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest book and brochure supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.
In South Africa, book and brochure exports contracted by an average annual rate of -5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (-16.8% per year) and Tanzania (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Book And Brochure Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of books, brochures and similar printed matter increased by 15% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, book and brochure imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 7.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Tanzania (X units) and South Africa (X units) were the major importers of books, brochures and similar printed matter in 2022, amounting to approx. 25% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Mozambique (X units) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (6.3%), Madagascar (6%) and Zimbabwe (5.7%). The following importers - Swaziland (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Lesotho (X units), Zambia (X units), Malawi (X units), Namibia (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +11.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported books, brochures and similar printed matter in SADC, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -9.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+0.5% per year) and Tanzania (+9.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
