Bottled Water Market Size in SADC
The SADC bottled water market totaled $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Bottled Water Production in SADC
In value terms, bottled water production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 23%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of bottled waters were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bottled water exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 17%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. Mozambique (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+35.9%) and Tanzania (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+74 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest bottled water supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports.
In South Africa, bottled water exports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+23.5% per year) and Tanzania (-4.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Bottled Water Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of bottled waters, when their volume increased by 8.7% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bottled water imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Namibia (X tons), distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Angola (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Comoros (X tons) were the largest importers of bottled waters, together constituting 88% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Namibia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 55% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Mauritius, Angola, Swaziland, Comoros and Zimbabwe, which together accounted for a further 29%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +4.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
