After four years of growth, the SADC market for bottles, jars and other containers of glass decreased by -20.9% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Production of Bottles, Jars And Other Containers Of Glass in SADC
In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container production declined markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 72%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of bottles, jars and other containers of glass increased by 14% to X units for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 25%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the largest exporter of bottles, jars and other containers of glass, comprising 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units) and Angola (X units), together mixing up a 40% share of total exports. The following exporters - Swaziland (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) - each reached a 3.4% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+57.0%), Swaziland (+25.7%) and Tanzania (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +57.0% from 2012-2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Angola (+12 p.p.) and Tanzania (+8.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-11.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest glass bottle, jar and container supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Angola, with a CAGR of +42.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, surging by 7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Bottles, Jars And Other Containers Of Glass
Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of bottles, jars and other containers of glass were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the key importing country with an import of around X units, which accounted for 32% of total imports. Namibia (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X units), Zambia (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Madagascar (X units). All these countries together held approx. 53% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to glass bottle, jar and container imports into South Africa stood at +6.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+15.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.4%), Zambia (+9.0%), Namibia (+6.6%), Zimbabwe (+6.2%) and Madagascar (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mozambique (+7.3 p.p.), South Africa (+3.1 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.3 p.p.), Zambia (+2.2 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 56% of total imports.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +16.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
