Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X units of braces, suspenders and garters were exported in SADC; picking up by 13% on 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +25.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 114% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, braces and garters exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 139% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the main exporter of braces, suspenders and garters, creating 76% of total exports. Madagascar (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mauritius (X units). All these countries together held approx. 20% share of total exports. Lesotho (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lesotho (+51.0%), Madagascar (+26.2%) and Mauritius (+21.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +51.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Madagascar (+10 p.p.), Mauritius (+4.3 p.p.) and Lesotho (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-15 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest braces and garters supplier in SADC, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Madagascar stood at +28.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+2.4% per year) and Mauritius (+9.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -9.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 46%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Braces And Garters Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of braces, suspenders and garters decreased by -23.6% to X units, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, braces and garters imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 21%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the main importer of braces, suspenders and garters in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Namibia (8.7%), Tanzania (8.5%), Madagascar (6.8%), Angola (6.5%) and Botswana (5.5%).

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+51.1%), Tanzania (+28.3%) and Namibia (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +51.1% from 2012-2022. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mauritius (-4.8%) and Angola (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Madagascar, Namibia and Botswana increased by +8.1, +6.8, +6.3 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported braces, suspenders and garters in SADC, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 6.4% share.

In South Africa, braces and garters imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (+59.1% per year) and Mauritius (-14.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
