The SADC brewing dregs market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a mild curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, brewing dregs production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 15%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of brewing or distilling dregs and waste, when their volume decreased by -67.2% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 243% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, brewing dregs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 386% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mozambique represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together generating a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to brewing dregs exports from Mozambique stood at -14.7%. Madagascar (-6.8%) and Tanzania (-63.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Madagascar and Tanzania increased by +13 and +6.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X) emerged as the largest brewing dregs supplier in SADC, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports.

In Madagascar, brewing dregs exports increased at an average annual rate of +18.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (-16.8% per year) and Tanzania (-54.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 437% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a significant expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+26.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of brewing or distilling dregs and waste were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 35%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, brewing dregs imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -7.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of brewing or distilling dregs and waste, comprising 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X tons), Seychelles (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 9.1% of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of brewing or distilling dregs and waste. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+38.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+23.0%) and Namibia (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.8% from 2012-2022. Seychelles experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Madagascar (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Seychelles and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +5.2, +3.1, +2.1 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brewing or distilling dregs and waste in SADC, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Madagascar ($X), with a 1.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 0.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +1.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Madagascar (-6.9% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
