In 2022, approx. X tons of broad beans and horse beans (dry) were exported in SADC; with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, exports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -16.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 49%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Zambia represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 82% of total exports. Madagascar (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malawi (6.4%).

Exports from Zambia increased at an average annual rate of +24.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+28.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Madagascar (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Zambia and Malawi increased by +51 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Zambia ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Malawi ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Malawi, with a CAGR of +32.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 14%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of broad beans and horse beans (dry) increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, broad bean and horse bean imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 63%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 70% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 25% share of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo increased at an average annual rate of +63.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+95.0%) and Lesotho (+23.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +95.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+68 p.p.) and Namibia (+10 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-65.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritius ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Namibia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total imports.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +89.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
