Twig Broom Market Size in SADC

After two years of growth, the SADC twig broom market decreased by -1.2% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Twig Broom Production in SADC

In value terms, twig broom production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X units of brooms and brushes of twigs were exported in SADC; surging by 12% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, twig broom exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), constituting a 6.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to twig broom exports from South Africa stood at -1.0%. At the same time, Tanzania (+21.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +21.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Tanzania (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest twig broom supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 2% share of total exports.

In South Africa, twig broom exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 5.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.5%).

In 2021, purchases abroad of brooms and brushes of twigs increased by 51% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +57.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, twig broom imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 54%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X units), creating a 6.1% share of total imports. Madagascar (X units), Angola (X units), Tanzania (X units), Swaziland (X units) and Zambia (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to twig broom imports into South Africa stood at +17.7%. At the same time, Madagascar (+33.5%), Angola (+2.3%) and Botswana (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Swaziland (-4.8%), Tanzania (-7.3%) and Zambia (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+39 p.p.) and Madagascar (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola, Swaziland, Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania saw its share reduced by -2.6%, -4.8%, -5.2%, -5.4% and -7.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest twig broom importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Swaziland, Zambia, Tanzania and Madagascar, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Madagascar, with a CAGR of +21.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -12.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 1.4%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
