Market Size for Brooms, Brushes, And Mops in SADC

The SADC broom, brush, and mop market declined slightly to $X in 2022, falling by -2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +7.7% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Production of Brooms, Brushes, And Mops in SADC

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 48%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports of Brooms, Brushes, And Mops

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of brooms, brushes, and mops exported in SADC rose modestly to X units, surging by 4.1% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop exports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the key exporter of brooms, brushes, and mops, comprising 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), comprising a 25% share of total exports. Tanzania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to broom, brush, and mop exports from South Africa stood at -4.5%. Mauritius (-3.3%) and Tanzania (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mauritius (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -2.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest broom, brush, and mop supplier in SADC, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+1.0% per year) and Tanzania (-3.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -7.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Brooms, Brushes, And Mops

Imports in SADC

In 2022, supplies from abroad of brooms, brushes, and mops increased by 0.3% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, broom, brush, and mop imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Madagascar (X units). All these countries together held approx. 23% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Namibia (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of brooms, brushes, and mops. At the same time, Madagascar (+11.5%), Tanzania (+5.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.0%) and Mauritius (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-2.6%) and Angola (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+5.2 p.p.), Madagascar (+3.4 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -9.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brooms, brushes, and mops in SADC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 7.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.5% share.

In South Africa, broom, brush, and mop imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-7.7% per year) and Mauritius (+5.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
