Imports in SADC
In 2021, overseas purchases of builders' joinery and carpentry of wood increased by 33% to X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 43% of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Angola (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lesotho (+13.1%), Madagascar (+9.0%), Zimbabwe (+3.3%) and Tanzania (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2021. Swaziland and Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-5.8%), Zambia (-10.2%), Mauritius (-10.2%), Botswana (-14.3%) and Angola (-21.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Madagascar increased by +17, +11, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest wooden joinery and carpentry importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Namibia ($X), together comprising 52% of total imports. These countries were followed by Lesotho, Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Zambia, Mauritius, Tanzania and Madagascar, which together accounted for a further 42%.
Madagascar, with a CAGR of +9.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 8.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+14.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
