The SADC bulldozer market soared to $X in 2022, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. In 2022, overseas shipments of bulldozers and angle dozers decreased by -31% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports faced a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bulldozer exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the major exporter of bulldozers and angle dozers, comprising 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X units) and Botswana (X units), together generating a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Angola (X units) - together made up 11% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -19.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.6%) and Zambia (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +3.6% from 2012-2022. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-1.0%), Angola (-6.0%) and Tanzania (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+9.4 p.p.), Botswana (+4.1 p.p.), Zambia (+3.3 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.5 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-27.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest bulldozer supplier in SADC, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -16.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+5.0% per year) and Botswana (+3.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 34% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of bulldozers and angle dozers increased by 19% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bulldozer imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which resulted at 42% of total imports. Tanzania (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Mozambique (X units). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 6.9% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.9% from 2012 to 2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.0%), Zimbabwe (-4.8%), Angola (-7.4%), Namibia (-10.7%) and Mozambique (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +8.8, +7.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bulldozers and angle dozers in SADC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -7.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-0.7% per year) and Angola (-7.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
