Bumper Market Size in SADC

In 2022, the SADC bumper market increased by 4.5% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bumper production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 35%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of bumpers increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +45.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bumper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 20%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bumper exports from South Africa stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Tanzania (+22.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +1.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest bumper supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 1.8% share of total exports.

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.7%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of bumpers increased by 7.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bumper imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 10% share of total imports. Tanzania (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bumper imports into South Africa stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+13.3%) and Mauritius (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-1.2%), Tanzania (-4.7%), Namibia (-6.9%) and Angola (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+13 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-2.4 p.p.), Namibia (-2.6 p.p.) and Angola (-11 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bumpers in SADC, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 3.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 3% share.

In South Africa, bumper imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (-4.3% per year) and Angola (-8.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
