The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together reaching 99.9% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the butanone (methyl ethyl ketone) exports, with a CAGR of -1.9% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest butanone supplier in SADC.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, butanone imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of butanone imports in 2022 were Mauritius (X tons), Angola (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together finishing at 88% of total import. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), comprising a 4.5% share of total imports. Malawi (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +33.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 63% share of total imports. Tanzania, Namibia, Zambia and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +27.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -13.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
