For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of butene (butylene) and isomers thereof, which increased by 21% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 1,135% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, butene and isomers thereof exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 425%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporter of butene (butylene) and isomers thereof in SADC, creating 100% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the butene (butylene) and isomers thereof exports, with a CAGR of +40.7% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (+15 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest butene and isomers thereof supplier in SADC.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of butene (butylene) and isomers thereof were imported in SADC; rising by 138% on 2020. In general, imports, however, saw a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 414%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, butene and isomers thereof imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 224%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Angola represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total imports. The following importers - Mauritius (X kg) and Botswana (X kg) - together made up 7.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of +21.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported butene (butylene) and isomers thereof in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 6% share.

In South Africa, butene and isomers thereof imports contracted by an average annual rate of -29.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-3.3% per year) and Zambia (+6.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -41.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 186% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
