Zambia (X kg) constituted the country with the largest volume of butter and dairy spreads production, comprising approx. 100% of total volume.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of butter and dairy spreads exported in SADC rose markedly to X tons, increasing by 6.4% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, butter and dairy spreads exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -10.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+50.9%), Angola (+30.1%) and Namibia (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Mauritius (+2.7 p.p.), Angola (+2.1 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest butter and dairy spreads supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 2.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 2% share.
In South Africa, butter and dairy spreads exports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+4.5% per year) and Mauritius (+42.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and dairy spreads export price decreased by -15.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 64%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Butter And Dairy Spreads
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of butter and dairy spreads imported in SADC dropped significantly to X tons, reducing by -18.4% on 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 47%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importer of butter and dairy spreads in SADC, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Namibia (11%), Angola (9.4%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.9%). The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to butter and dairy spreads imports into South Africa stood at -5.2%. At the same time, Tanzania (+10.2%), Mauritius (+2.2%) and Madagascar (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2022. Mozambique and Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-1.6%), Botswana (-1.8%), Angola (-2.0%), Seychelles (-2.6%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritius, Tanzania and Namibia increased by +5.6, +3 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
