The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 101%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, buttermilk and buttermilk powder exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Swaziland (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - together made up 5.7% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+62.1%) and Zimbabwe (+61.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +62.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Swaziland (+3.5 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest buttermilk and buttermilk powder supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.

In South Africa, buttermilk and buttermilk powder exports increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+54.6% per year) and Zimbabwe (+54.5% per year).

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, buttermilk and buttermilk powder export price increased by +37.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 60% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

For the fourth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas purchases of buttermilk and buttermilk powder, which increased by 64% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X tons), distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), Angola (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) represented the main importers of buttermilk and buttermilk powder, together mixing up 91% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +38.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -11.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
