In value terms, button blanks and moulds exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 150%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2022, Mauritius (X tons) represented the major exporter of button blanks & button moulds, mixing up 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons), together mixing up a 39% share of total exports. Botswana (X kg) took a little share of total exports.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of button blanks & button moulds increased by 28% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa represented the main importer of button blanks & button moulds in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2022. Madagascar (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Botswana (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together held near 28% share of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each reached a 6.2% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+63.9%) and Botswana (+31.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +63.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.2%), Madagascar (-7.1%), Zimbabwe (-17.1%) and Mauritius (-19.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (+8.7 p.p.), Namibia (+7.9 p.p.) and South Africa (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Madagascar, Zimbabwe and Mauritius saw its share reduced by -4.3%, -7.8% and -8.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +54.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -26.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
