In general, exports, however, faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 385%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, calcareous building stone exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) represented the key exporters of calcareous building stone, together committing 97% of total exports. Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +11.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest calcareous building stone supplier in SADC, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 8.3% share.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -12.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 113%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+15.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of calcareous building stone were imported in SADC; rising by 15% against 2020. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 193% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calcareous building stone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 261%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented the key importer of calcareous building stone in SADC, mixing up 62% of total import. Madagascar (X tons) held a 9.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (8.6%), Mauritius (7%) and Namibia (5.5%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Madagascar (with a CAGR of +32.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest calcareous building stone importing markets in SADC were Angola ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Tanzania ($X), together comprising 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by Namibia, South Africa, Madagascar and Mauritius, which together accounted for a further 19%.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
