Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporter of calcium carbonate in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together mixing up a 46% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +18.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+58.5%), Tanzania (+39.2%) and Zambia (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +58.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania and Mauritius increased by +14 and +8.1 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest calcium carbonate supplier in SADC, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with an 8% share.
In South Africa, calcium carbonate exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+24.6% per year) and Zambia (+9.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of calcium carbonate was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calcium carbonate imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the major importer of calcium carbonate in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Angola (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 31% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to calcium carbonate imports into South Africa stood at +10.3%. At the same time, Botswana (+25.1%), Mozambique (+18.3%), Zimbabwe (+17.0%), Angola (+13.8%), Mauritius (+4.1%) and Tanzania (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+6.3 p.p.) and Angola (+6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tanzania (-11.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calcium carbonate in SADC, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 13% share.
In South Africa, calcium carbonate imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+11.1% per year) and Tanzania (-1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
