Calendering Machine Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC calendering machine market decreased by -20.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, recorded a tangible increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Calendering Machine Production in SADC

In value terms, calendering machine production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 2.6%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in SADC

For the fourth consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in shipments abroad of calendering and rolling machines, which decreased by -37.5% to X units in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 383% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, calendering machine exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 162% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 80% of total exports in 2021. Botswana (X units) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Swaziland (10%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.4% from 2012 to 2021. Botswana and Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana and Swaziland increased by +1.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest calendering machine supplier in SADC, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports.

In South Africa, calendering machine exports shrank by an average annual rate of -18.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-2.8% per year) and Swaziland (-31.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, declining by -66.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 179%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (-6.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Calendering Machine Imports

Imports in SADC

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of calendering and rolling machines decreased by -15.6% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 395% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, calendering machine imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 184%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of calendering and rolling machines in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), generating a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Zimbabwe (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - each accounted for a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to calendering machine imports into South Africa stood at +11.6%. At the same time, Angola (+15.6%), Zimbabwe (+14.6%) and Tanzania (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012-2021. South Africa (+18 p.p.) and Angola (+6.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 90% of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +76.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 32% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 105%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+60.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
