Camel Meat Market Size in SADC

The SADC camel meat market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Camel Meat Production in SADC

In value terms, camel meat production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 25%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of camel meat production was Zimbabwe (X kg), comprising approx. 77% of total volume. Moreover, camel meat production in Zimbabwe exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Namibia (X kg), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Zimbabwe was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Namibia (+1.1% per year) and South Africa (-14.5% per year).

Exports in SADC

In 2019, shipments abroad of camel meat decreased by -63.5% to X kg for the first time since 2015, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 413% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X kg, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, camel meat exports contracted notably to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1,231% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X kg), together finishing at 100% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the camel meat exports, with a CAGR of -6.9% from 2012 to 2019. From 2012 to 2019, the share of South Africa increased by +17 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In South Africa, camel meat exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2019.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2019, which is down by -65.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 2,226% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2019, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2019, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +12.7% per year.

Imports in SADC

In 2019, supplies from abroad of camel meat decreased by 0% to X kg, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 302%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, camel meat imports totaled $X in 2019. In general, imports showed a perceptible increase. The smallest decline of -32% was in 2017. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, imports failed to regain momentum.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2019, surging by 3,339% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 3,339%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2019, import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Mozambique.

From 2012 to 2019, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Mozambique amounted to +9.3% per year.
