Exports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery were exported in SADC; surging by 5.3% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporter of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery, comprising 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together achieving a 40% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Zimbabwe and Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of South Africa (+8.7 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery supplier in SADC, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 9.8% share.
In South Africa, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+2.0% per year) and Zambia (-2.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Candies, Sweets, and Nonchocolate Confectionery
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imported in SADC fell markedly to X tons, which is down by -15.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 37% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (13%), Tanzania (7%), Botswana (6.7%) and Namibia (5.9%). Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports into South Africa stood at +3.7%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.7%), Mozambique (+6.5%), Botswana (+5.4%), Tanzania (+5.1%) and Namibia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+18 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.9 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.8 p.p.), Botswana (+3.7 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-37.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery in SADC, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 9.4% share.
In South Africa, candy, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.7% per year) and Angola (-14.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
