Canned Food Market Size in SADC

The SADC canned food market reduced to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Canned Food Production in SADC

In value terms, canned food production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Canned Food Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of canned food decreased by -1.6% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 16%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, canned food exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 24%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of canned food in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 67% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), committing a 23% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of canned food. At the same time, Madagascar (+28.5%), Zambia (+16.7%) and Zimbabwe (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Swaziland (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (+20 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Swaziland (-1.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-18.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 2.9% share.

In South Africa, canned food exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (+13.3% per year) and Swaziland (+1.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Canned Food Imports

Imports in SADC

Canned food imports fell slightly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -2.3% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 7.2%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned food imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) were the key importers of canned food in SADC, together resulting at approx. 43% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Angola (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons). All these countries together held near 43% share of total imports. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Seychelles (with a CAGR of +11.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest canned food importing markets in SADC were Mozambique ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mauritius ($X), together accounting for 50% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +8.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
