Canned Vegetable Market Size in SADC
In 2022, the SADC canned vegetable market increased by 3.1% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Canned Vegetable Production in SADC
In value terms, canned vegetable production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 17%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Canned Vegetable Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of canned vegetables exported in SADC expanded remarkably to X tons, picking up by 8.4% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned vegetable exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -9.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 40%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main exporter of canned vegetables, mixing up 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), creating a 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.8% share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of canned vegetables. At the same time, Namibia (+22.3%), Madagascar (+12.6%) and Tanzania (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of Madagascar (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-18.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Namibia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 97% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +25.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Canned Vegetable Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of canned vegetables, when their volume decreased by -3.8% to X tons. In general, imports showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, canned vegetable imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 33% of total imports. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Mauritius (11%), Botswana (9.2%), Namibia (6.2%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.6%). Swaziland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned vegetable importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports. Mauritius, Namibia, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +11.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
