Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, exports of carbides in SADC reduced notably to X tons, with a decrease of -15.8% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbides exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 118%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the major exporter of carbides in SADC, constituting 98% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carbides exports, with a CAGR of -14.6% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest carbides supplier in SADC.
In South Africa, carbides exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 112% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +18.4% per year.
Carbides Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of carbides were imported in SADC; declining by -7.9% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, carbides imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a slight increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the key importer of carbides, committing 44% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 50% share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+12.4%) and Namibia (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.4% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.7%), Zambia (-2.8%) and Angola (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+13 p.p.), Madagascar (+4.5 p.p.) and Namibia (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Zambia (-1.7 p.p.) and Angola (-11.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carbides in SADC, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.3% share.
In South Africa, carbides imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zimbabwe (+7.1% per year) and Tanzania (+1.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 75% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carbides import price increased by +108.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
