The SADC plastic bottle market dropped significantly to $X in 2022, reducing by -83.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a precipitous slump. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), creating a 33% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics imported in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 39% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated significant growth from 2020 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +20.5% over the last two years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +45.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic bottle imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a significant increase from 2020 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +21.4% over the last two-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main importers of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics in SADC, together committing 70% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 29% share of total imports.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +37.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics in SADC, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 11% share.
