South Africa was the largest exporter of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), creating a 33% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2020 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of +15.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic bottle supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Mauritius, with a CAGR of +35.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Total imports indicated significant growth from 2020 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +20.5% over the last two years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +45.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic bottle imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a significant increase from 2020 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +21.4% over the last two-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) were the main importers of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics in SADC, together committing 70% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 29% share of total imports.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +37.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics in SADC, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, plastic bottle imports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.7% over the period from 2020-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+9.1% per year) and Mauritius (+23.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
