Trailer And Semi-Trailer Market Size in SADC

The SADC trailer and semi-trailer market surged to $X in 2022, increasing by 27% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +42.3% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Production in SADC

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer production rose markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 183% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of cargo trailers and semi-trailers increased by 29% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +141.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. Botswana (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.5% from 2012 to 2022. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest trailer and semi-trailer supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 0.6% share of total exports.

In South Africa, trailer and semi-trailer exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana totaled $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+10.5%).

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, purchases abroad of cargo trailers and semi-trailers increased by 21% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 204% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 75% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X units) was the key importer of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, making up 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X units), Zambia (X units), Botswana (X units), Namibia (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units), together making up a 54% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cargo trailers and semi-trailers imports, with a CAGR of +19.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+6.5%), Mozambique (+5.5%), Namibia (+4.4%), Zimbabwe (+4.2%), Zambia (+2.8%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tanzania (+27 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia saw its share reduced by -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cargo trailers and semi-trailers in SADC, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tanzania totaled +5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+4.1% per year) and Zimbabwe (+9.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -7.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 119% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
