In value terms, wood box and cable drum exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 58% of total exports. Botswana (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X units) and Mozambique (X units). All these countries together took near 40% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+62.3%) and Botswana (+28.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +62.3% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana and Mozambique increased by +22 and +8.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood box and cable drum supplier in SADC, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -11.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+3.2% per year) and Mozambique (+47.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 149% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of wood boxes, crates and cable drums imported in SADC reduced dramatically to X units, waning by -16% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood box and cable drum imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Botswana (X units) was the key importer of wood boxes, crates and cable drums, achieving 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Angola (X units) and Namibia (X units), together making up a 34% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X units) and Swaziland (X units) - each resulted at a 3% share of total imports.

Imports into Botswana increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zambia (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-1.2%), Namibia (-6.0%), Angola (-16.0%) and Swaziland (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+27 p.p.) and South Africa (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-2 p.p.), Swaziland (-5.9 p.p.) and Angola (-17.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wood box and cable drum importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Botswana ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. Namibia, Zambia and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Among the main importing countries, Zambia, with a CAGR of +4.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 38%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
