Cauliflower And Broccoli Market Size in SADC

The SADC cauliflower and broccoli market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, increasing by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cauliflower And Broccoli Production in SADC

In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 163% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of cauliflower and broccoli production was South Africa (X tons), accounting for 84% of total volume. Moreover, cauliflower and broccoli production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mauritius (X tons), with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tanzania (+1.9% per year) and Mauritius (-6.0% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of cauliflower and broccoli in SADC expanded modestly to X tons per ha, surging by 1.7% on the previous year. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the cauliflower and broccoli yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cauliflower and broccoli harvested area declined modestly to X ha in 2022, which is down by -3.1% against 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cauliflower and broccoli production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of cauliflower and broccoli were exported in SADC; falling by -33.2% against the year before. Overall, exports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 54%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 49%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of cauliflower and broccoli, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cauliflower and broccoli exports, with a CAGR of -2.9% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest cauliflower and broccoli supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +3.3% per year.

Cauliflower And Broccoli Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of cauliflower and broccoli were imported in SADC; which is down by -7.3% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cauliflower and broccoli imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Botswana was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 34% of total imports. Lesotho (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (14%), Mozambique (6.9%), Swaziland (6.7%), South Africa (5%) and Angola (4.7%). Mauritius (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cauliflower and broccoli imports into Botswana stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+4.9%) and Mauritius (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +4.9% from 2012-2022. Angola and Swaziland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Lesotho (-4.8%), South Africa (-11.1%) and Namibia (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana, Mozambique, Swaziland, Mauritius and Angola increased by +9.2, +4.5, +3.1, +2.5 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cauliflower and broccoli importing markets in SADC were Botswana ($X), Namibia ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +11.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cauliflower and broccoli import price increased by +85.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 26%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
