Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of central heating boilers, for producing hot water or low pressure steam skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X units) represented the largest importer of central heating boilers, for producing hot water or low pressure steam, generating 45% of total imports. Zambia (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Malawi (X units), Mozambique (X units) and South Africa (X units). All these countries together took near 38% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units) and Botswana (X units) - each reached an 8.3% share of total imports.

Imports into Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +49.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+64.5%) and Botswana (+31.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +64.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-3.0%), Mozambique (-11.2%), Angola (-13.1%) and South Africa (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Malawi and Botswana increased by +44, +9 and +3.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest central heating boilers, for producing hot water or low pressure steam importing markets in SADC were Tanzania ($X), Mozambique ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 57% of total imports. Malawi, Zambia, Angola and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Malawi, with a CAGR of +64.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -31.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
