In 2021, the SADC ceramic household article market increased by 7.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic household article production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 146% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of ceramic household articles and toilet articles were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ceramic household article exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ceramic household article exports from South Africa stood at -3.6%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+16.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+4.7 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ceramic household article supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -1.8%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.9%).
Ceramic Household Article Imports
Imports in SADC
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of ceramic household articles and toilet articles increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ceramic household article imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of ceramic household articles and toilet articles, achieving 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together making up a 28% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Comoros (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ceramic household article imports into South Africa stood at -2.1%. At the same time, Madagascar (+26.2%), Comoros (+20.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.0%), Tanzania (+4.0%) and Zambia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mozambique (-2.8%), Botswana (-5.8%) and Angola (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+7.5 p.p.), Madagascar (+3.5 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2 p.p.) and Comoros (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-12.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Angola ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Comoros, Madagascar, Zambia, Mozambique and Botswana, which together accounted for a further 15%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Comoros, with a CAGR of +31.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
