Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures decreased by -10% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports faced a significant curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 40%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ceramic sanitary ware exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X units) represented the largest exporter of ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures, creating 48% of total exports. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Zambia (18%). Namibia (X units), Mauritius (X units), Botswana (X units) and Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Tanzania decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+13.5%) and Zambia (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-19.9%), Mauritius (-24.0%), Namibia (-37.3%) and South Africa (-46.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+47 p.p.), Zambia (+18 p.p.), Mozambique (+2.2 p.p.), Botswana (+2.2 p.p.) and Mauritius (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-75.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zambia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 73% share of total exports. Namibia, Mozambique, Mauritius and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, growing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Ceramic sanitary ware imports soared to X units in 2022, jumping by 33% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 42%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ceramic sanitary ware imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of about X units, which finished at 50% of total imports. Mauritius (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports. Botswana (X units), Zambia (X units), Angola (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Malawi (X units) held a little share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures imports, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+11.2%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.5%) and Namibia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.9%), Zambia (-2.5%), Malawi (-6.2%), Mozambique (-7.0%), Zimbabwe (-7.8%) and Angola (-18.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+33 p.p.), Mauritius (+6 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Angola saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -2.4%, -2.5%, -3.9%, -4.5% and -25.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ceramic sinks, baths, water closet pans and similar sanitary fixtures in SADC, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +15.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+0.1% per year) and Zambia (+5.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
