Ceramic Tile Market Size in SADC

For the third year in a row, the SADC ceramic tile market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.3% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Ceramic Tile Production in SADC

In value terms, ceramic tile production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 35%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Ceramic Tile Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of ceramic tiles exported in SADC contracted remarkably to X square meters, falling by -20.4% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 254%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, ceramic tile exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X square meters, which recorded 54% of total exports. Zimbabwe (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 36% share, followed by Tanzania (8.3%). Botswana (X square meters) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +82.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest ceramic tile supplier in SADC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+53.1% per year) and Botswana (-5.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per square meter in 2022, jumping by 41% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 58% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per square meter), while Zimbabwe ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Ceramic Tile Imports

Imports in SADC

Ceramic tile imports contracted to X square meters in 2022, which is down by -6.2% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X square meters, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, ceramic tile imports expanded to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 41%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of ceramic tiles in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X square meters, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X square meters), Angola (X square meters), Tanzania (X square meters), Madagascar (X square meters), Zimbabwe (X square meters), Botswana (X square meters) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X square meters), together achieving a 44% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+11.6%), Mozambique (+7.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.4%), Botswana (+5.8%) and Zimbabwe (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-8.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mozambique (+4.1 p.p.), South Africa (+3.5 p.p.) and Madagascar (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-14.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ceramic tiles in SADC, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -4.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-8.7% per year) and Botswana (+15.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per square meter in 2022, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per square meter), while South Africa ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
