Cereal Germ Market Size in SADC
In 2021, the SADC cereal germ market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Cereal Germ Production in SADC
In value terms, cereal germ production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of cereal germ, when their volume decreased by -1.4% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 242% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, cereal germ exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 156%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Zambia prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cereal germ exports, with a CAGR of +60.8% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zambia increased by +84 percentage points.
In value terms, Zambia ($X) remains the largest cereal germ supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 9.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Zambia totaled +43.3%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.6%).

Imports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of cereal germ were imported in SADC; increasing by 18% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 147% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cereal germ imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 92%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the largest importer of cereal germ in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2021. Lesotho (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons) and Namibia (X tons). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - each accounted for a 12% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +58.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cereal germ in SADC, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lesotho ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with an 11% share.
In South Africa, cereal germ imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lesotho (-5.5% per year) and Swaziland (+36.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 91%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
