Exports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) exported in SADC fell significantly to X tons, reducing by -24% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Zambia represented the main exporter of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), achieving a 21% share of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-wheat cereal pellets exports from Zambia stood at -22.0%. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (-21.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+8 p.p.), South Africa (+4.4 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Zambia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 100% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of -3.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 91% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 189% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Democratic Republic of the Congo dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 86% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) held a 6.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Lesotho (4.8%). Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-wheat cereal pellets imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at -2.9%. At the same time, South Africa (+72.4%) and Lesotho (+12.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +72.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-30.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+31 p.p.), South Africa (+6.5 p.p.) and Lesotho (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -22% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest non-wheat cereal pellets importing markets in SADC were Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), South Africa ($X) and Lesotho ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +82.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -8.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-wheat cereal pellets import price decreased by -26.0% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
