Non-Electric Chainsaw Market Size in SADC

The SADC non-electric chainsaw market contracted to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -9.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +67.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor increased by 2.6% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 38%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the main exporter of chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor in SADC, constituting 99% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor exports, with a CAGR of -1.9% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +3.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest non-electric chainsaw supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -6.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -11.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports in SADC

Non-electric chainsaw imports contracted significantly to X units in 2022, falling by -19.9% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, non-electric chainsaw imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 71%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 68% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X units) held an 8.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (7.2%). Botswana (X units), Zambia (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-electric chainsaw imports into South Africa stood at +1.6%. At the same time, Mauritius (+22.4%), Zimbabwe (+19.8%), Tanzania (+13.4%), Zambia (+10.9%) and Botswana (+10.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zimbabwe (+5.6 p.p.), Tanzania (+5.1 p.p.), Mauritius (+1.9 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -6.7% and -11.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chainsaws with a self-contained non-electric motor in SADC, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 9.9% share.

In South Africa, non-electric chainsaw imports declined by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+11.6% per year) and Zimbabwe (+18.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
