South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+27.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2021. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest check valve supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 29% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31% against the previous year. In 2021, overseas purchases of check valves for pipes, boiler shells, tanks and vats increased by 7.3% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, check valve imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 56% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Tanzania (X units), together committing a 28% share of total imports. The following importers - Swaziland (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of check valves for pipes, boiler shells, tanks and vats. At the same time, Swaziland (+15.3%), Zimbabwe (+8.8%) and Namibia (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012-2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.0%) and Angola (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe and Swaziland increased by +3.3 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest check valve importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania and Swaziland, which together accounted for a further 9.2%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +5.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -18.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
