The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cheese and curd exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +41.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cheese and curd exports from South Africa stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+27.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cheese and curd supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports.

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.7%).

Imports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of cheese and curd were imported in SADC; reducing by -3.2% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cheese and curd imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) represented the main importers of cheese and curd in 2022, recording approx. 25% and 20% of total imports, respectively. Namibia (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (9.1%) and Botswana (7.4%). Mozambique (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Seychelles (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Seychelles (with a CAGR of +9.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Namibia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 61% of total imports. Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Madagascar, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Seychelles, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

Seychelles, with a CAGR of +10.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
