Exports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides were exported in SADC; which is down by -37.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 438% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chemical contraceptive preparations exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 524% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), comprising a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chemical contraceptive preparations exports from South Africa stood at -10.8%. At the same time, Tanzania (+34.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012-2021. The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 48% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 567% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+6.3%).

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides, when their volume decreased by -18.8% to X tons. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +59.3% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, chemical contraceptive preparations imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 43%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the largest importers of chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides, together creating 92% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +34.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides in SADC, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with an 8.6% share.

In South Africa, chemical contraceptive preparations imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+21.4% per year) and Madagascar (+11.8% per year).

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 51% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
