In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +87.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 99.9% of total exports in 2021.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dissolving grade wood pulp exports, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest dissolving grade wood pulp supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. Imports in SADC
In 2021, the amount of dissolving grade wood pulp imported in SADC rose significantly to X tons, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2,039%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 731%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 50% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 43% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 7% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+35.7%), Mauritius (+33.5%) and Madagascar (+12.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012-2021. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+21 p.p.), Madagascar (+7.4 p.p.) and Swaziland (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mozambique (-1.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-28.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X), South Africa ($X) and Madagascar ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 90% of total imports.
Mauritius, with a CAGR of +34.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 119%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
