In value terms, chick peas production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. Tanzania (X tons) remains the largest chick peas producing country in SADC, comprising approx. 97% of total volume. It was followed by Botswana (X tons), with a 2.1% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Tanzania stood at +2.2%.

In 2022, the average yield of chick peas in SADC soared to X tons per ha, picking up by 43% against the previous year's figure. The yield indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chick peas yield increased by +30.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, the yield attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of chick peas production in SADC expanded remarkably to X ha, growing by 9.1% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to chick peas production attained the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of chick peas exported in SADC soared to X tons, growing by 80% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 159%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, chick peas exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of chick peas, namely Tanzania, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas exports, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Tanzania (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) also remains the largest chick peas supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 40%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Tanzania.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Tanzania amounted to -2.9% per year.

Chick Peas Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, supplies from abroad of chick peas decreased by -29.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -13.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importer of chick peas in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons) and Angola (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas imports, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+9.4%) and Mauritius (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Angola (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Zimbabwe increased by +19 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chick peas in SADC, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 12% share.

In South Africa, chick peas imports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+14.0% per year) and Mauritius (+6.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mauritius ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) and Angola ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
