Chicken Table Egg Market Size in SADC

The SADC chicken table egg market totaled $X in 2022, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Chicken Table Egg Production in SADC

In value terms, chicken table egg production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -10.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) remains the largest chicken table egg producing country in SADC, comprising approx. 58% of total volume. Moreover, chicken table egg production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Zambia (X tons), with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in South Africa totaled +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+8.5% per year) and Zambia (+1.9% per year).

Chicken Table Egg Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, overseas shipments of chicken table eggs were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 81%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicken table egg exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 125%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together constituting 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together mixing up a 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Angola (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each finished at a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +49.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chicken table egg supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Swaziland ($X) and Malawi ($X), together accounting for 90% of total exports.

Malawi, with a CAGR of +57.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Chicken Table Egg Imports

Imports in SADC

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of chicken table eggs decreased by -32.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 151%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicken table egg imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports faced a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 181% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo represented the largest importer of chicken table eggs in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together generating a 25% share of total imports. Comoros (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicken table egg imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at -2.9%. At the same time, Tanzania (+82.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +82.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Comoros (-4.4%), Zimbabwe (-16.5%), Lesotho (-26.6%) and Angola (-42.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+62 p.p.), Tanzania (+12 p.p.), Comoros (+3.6 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-82.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chicken table eggs in SADC, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with an 8.5% share.

In Democratic Republic of the Congo, chicken table egg imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-45.4% per year) and Tanzania (+39.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
