The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 7,936% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chicory exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 961%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of chicory in SADC, achieving 99.9% of total export.

In 2021, purchases abroad of chicory decreased by -31.9% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 481% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicory imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 422%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of chicory imports in 2021 were South Africa (X tons), together recording 98% of total import.
