Chili And Pepper Market Size in SADC

The SADC chili and pepper market expanded remarkably to $X in 2022, picking up by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Chili And Pepper Production in SADC

In value terms, chili and pepper production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tanzania (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of chili and pepper production, accounting for 54% of total volume. Moreover, chili and pepper production in Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mauritius (X tons), with an 8.5% share.

In Tanzania, chili and pepper production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zimbabwe (+4.5% per year) and Mauritius (+5.2% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of chilies and peppers (green) in SADC rose notably to X tons per ha, growing by 6.3% on the year before. In general, the yield, however, saw a slight decline. Over the period under review, the chili and pepper yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of chilies and peppers (green) production in SADC reduced slightly to X ha, declining by -4.6% compared with the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 10%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then dropped in the following year.

Chili And Pepper Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of chilies and peppers (green) were exported in SADC; waning by -36.5% against the year before. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 29%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), generating an 8.7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of chilies and peppers (green). At the same time, Namibia (+62.6%), Tanzania (+25.8%) and Malawi (+23.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +62.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Madagascar (-3.8%) and Zimbabwe (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Namibia (+8.6 p.p.), South Africa (+6.2 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.3 p.p.) and Malawi (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Zimbabwe saw its share reduced by -5.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest chili and pepper supplier in SADC, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+53.1% per year) and Madagascar (-3.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 20%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Chili And Pepper Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of chilies and peppers (green) imported in SADC soared to X tons, jumping by 20% on 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 55% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), generating a 31% share of total imports. The following importers - Lesotho (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +30.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chili and pepper importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Seychelles ($X), with a combined 82% share of total imports. Lesotho and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.7%.

Lesotho, with a CAGR of +26.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
