The SADC market for chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts declined to $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. For the third year in a row, SADC recorded growth in shipments abroad of chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts, which increased by 0.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major exporter of chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts, creating 61% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took a 31% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Madagascar (6.2%). Zambia (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest cereal, fruit or nut chocolate bar supplier in SADC, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +8.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (-5.1% per year) and Madagascar (+12.4% per year).

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, waning by -8.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts increased by +33.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts decreased by -10.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the key importer of chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Mauritius (8%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts. At the same time, Mauritius (+25.5%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.5%), Madagascar (+3.3%) and Swaziland (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012-2022. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mozambique (-2.1%), Namibia (-2.3%), Botswana (-3.6%), Tanzania (-7.5%) and Angola (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritius, South Africa and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +7.3, +7 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chocolate bars with cereals, fruit or nuts in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +1.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+29.4% per year) and Angola (-4.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
