The SADC oxides and hydroxides market fell remarkably to $X in 2021, waning by -45.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oxides and hydroxides production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a perceptible shrinkage. In 2021, approx. X tons of chromium, manganese, lead and copper oxides and hydroxides were exported in SADC; with an increase of 8.6% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +11.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, oxides and hydroxides exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Zambia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chromium, manganese, lead and copper oxides and hydroxides exports, with a CAGR of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest oxides and hydroxides supplier in SADC, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -6.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (-5.1%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of chromium, manganese, lead and copper oxides and hydroxides, when their volume decreased by -81.4% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 366%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, oxides and hydroxides imports shrank to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 86% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), creating a 6.4% share of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.2% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+27.9%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tanzania (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mozambique increased by +18, +1.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chromium, manganese, lead and copper oxides and hydroxides in SADC, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 1.9% share.

In South Africa, oxides and hydroxides imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-7.3% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+19.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 367% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
