The SADC cider, perry and mead market dropped notably to $X in 2021, which is down by -95.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Production of Cider, Perry, Mead And Other Fermented Beverages in SADC

In value terms, cider, perry and mead production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages increased by 48% to X litres in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 53%. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X litres) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2021.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages. South Africa (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest cider, perry and mead supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -1.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per litre in 2021, increasing by 9.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -1.0% per year.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Botswana was the major importer of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages in SADC, with the volume of imports accounting for X litres, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2021. Mozambique (X litres) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (13%), Lesotho (8.1%) and Swaziland (5.5%). The following importers - Tanzania (X litres), Zimbabwe (X litres) and South Africa (X litres) - together made up 8.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cider, perry and mead imports into Botswana stood at +9.8%. At the same time, Mozambique (+46.0%), Tanzania (+7.1%), Lesotho (+2.5%) and Swaziland (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +46.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-5.1%), Namibia (-9.5%) and South Africa (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+25 p.p.), Mozambique (+19 p.p.), Lesotho (+2.3 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-10.2 p.p.) and Namibia (-14.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cider, perry and mead importing markets in SADC were Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Namibia ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +27.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per litre in 2021, declining by -6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per litre), while Botswana ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
