Cinnamon Production in SADC

Madagascar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of cinnamon production, accounting for 85% of total volume. Moreover, cinnamon production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), eightfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Madagascar totaled +4.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tanzania (+24.8% per year) and Namibia (+6.6% per year).
The average cinnamon yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -8.8% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the cinnamon yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the cinnamon harvested area in SADC fell to X ha, with a decrease of -2% against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the cinnamon harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, exports of cinnamon (canella) in SADC reduced dramatically to X tons, falling by -15.9% against the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +8.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, cinnamon exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Madagascar represented the major exporter of cinnamon (canella) in SADC, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Namibia (4.9%). South Africa (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Madagascar increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+52.5%), Namibia (+36.5%) and South Africa (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +52.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania and Namibia increased by +14 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) remains the largest cinnamon supplier in SADC, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Madagascar stood at +13.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+43.4% per year) and South Africa (-1.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 47%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cinnamon Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of cinnamon (canella) imported in SADC declined to X tons, waning by -2.8% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cinnamon imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X tons) held a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (7.1%). Tanzania (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+28.3%), Mozambique (+21.2%) and Angola (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2022. Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.3%) and Namibia (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+12 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-3 p.p.) and Namibia (-12.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cinnamon (canella) in SADC, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +11.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+11.3% per year) and Angola (-5.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
